Homeowners' pick for heating and cooling across northeast Ohio and the Western Reserve

Vent & Register Cleaning

We clean supply vents, return grilles and the register boxes behind them in homes across Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. This is the job when you see fuzz on the grille louvers, dust blowing out at startup, or you have just finished sanding, remodeling or replacing flooring. It is also common in older houses where floor registers collect pet hair, crumbs and construction dust. Call us and describe what you are seeing, and we will tell you whether registers alone will do it or the whole duct system needs attention.

What the job involves

We pull each register and return grille, wash the metal, and vacuum the boot below it, which is the sheet metal box between the grille and the duct. Floor registers in older homes hold a surprising amount: hair, coins, drywall dust, sometimes a pen cap. We use a brush and vacuum on the accessible run near the opening, then reseat the grille so it sits flat and the damper still moves. We work room by room and lay down protection so nothing tracks through the house.

What we check while we are there

With the grille off, we can see things you normally cannot. We look for rusted or crushed boots, gaps where the boot meets the subfloor, loose duct joints leaking conditioned air into a joist bay, and any sign of moisture staining. We confirm dampers open and close, note grilles that are painted shut or bent, and check that return openings are not blocked by furniture or rugs. If we find a disconnected run or damaged duct, we show you a photo and explain the repair options.

How we decide it is the right call

Register cleaning is the right call when the dust is at the openings and the airflow is otherwise steady. If you are getting weak airflow in the same rooms every season, smelling something musty when the system runs, or you have had rodents in a crawlspace, that points past the registers into the duct system itself. We would rather tell you that up front than clean grilles and leave the real problem in place. A short walkthrough usually settles it, and we will say plainly which one you need.

Vent & Register Cleaning — quick answers

How often should vents and registers be cleaned?

Most homes do fine every few years, sooner with pets, allergies or a remodel. Floor registers in high traffic rooms fill faster than ceiling ones. If you can see buildup on the louvers, it is time.

Is this the same as full duct cleaning?

No. Register cleaning covers the grilles, the boots behind them and the reachable duct near each opening. Full duct cleaning reaches trunk lines and branches throughout the system. We will tell you which fits your house.

Will cleaning registers improve airflow?

Sometimes. A grille packed with lint or a damper stuck half closed does restrict flow, and clearing that helps. If airflow is weak across the whole house, the cause is usually the filter, the ductwork or the blower.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on the phone shorten the visit considerably.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, the outdoor unit and the heat exchanger side before naming a cause. You get the finding in plain words, not a parts list you cannot read.

  3. Step 3

    You approve the repair

We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and what happens if you wait. Nothing gets replaced without your say so. Most common repairs are handled the same visit.

Why homeowners call us

  • Old housing stock is normal hereBasements with converted octopus trunk lines, ducts retrofitted around joists, returns that were never sized right. We work in these houses constantly and we size the repair to the house you actually have.
  • Long heating seasonsFurnaces in this region run hard from October into April, and lake effect stretches it further. We know what wear looks like at that mileage, from cracked igniters to blower motors that have been dragging for two winters.
  • Cooling and heating bothOne crew for air conditioning repair and heating repair. The same ductwork moves air in July and January, so a technician who understands both sides catches problems a single-season contractor tends to walk past.
  • Plain talk about repair versus replaceSometimes a part fixes it for years. Sometimes you are putting money into a system that is done. We tell you which one we think you are looking at and why, then leave the decision with you.
  • All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York and the rest.
  • Straight answersNot worth fixing? We say that out loud, and often it saves you the visit fee.
