Homeowners' pick for heating and cooling across northeast Ohio and the Western Reserve

Thermostat Replacement

We replace failed or outdated thermostats in homes across Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and we match the new control to the heating and cooling equipment you already own. Most homeowners call us when the screen goes blank, the temperature reading drifts, the furnace short cycles, or the old mercury unit can no longer hold a setting. Before you call, check the thermostat batteries and settings and look for a tripped breaker. If that does not bring it back, get in touch and we will schedule a visit.

What the replacement job involves

We start at the wall and then follow the wiring. Power comes off first, the old control comes down, and we record how every wire was terminated, because retrofit work in older houses rarely matches the label printed on the plate. Two-wire heat-only setups, missing common wires and abandoned conductors from a past system are all common in the homes we work in. Once we know what the wall gives us, we mount the new thermostat level, terminate the wiring properly, and bring the system back up in both heating and cooling.

What we check and what we install

We check the control voltage, the wire count, and whether your equipment is single stage, two stage, or has a variable speed blower, because the thermostat has to speak the same language as the furnace or air handler. We also look at where the old one was mounted. A thermostat above a supply register or on an exterior wall will read wrong no matter how new it is. From there we install a straightforward programmable or smart control, set the cycle rates for your equipment, and walk you through the screens.

How we decide replacement is the right call

Sometimes it is not the thermostat. A blank display can trace back to a blown low voltage fuse, a tripped float switch on the condensate line, or a broken wire in the wall, so we test before we sell anything. We recommend replacement when the contacts inside are worn, the temperature reading is off by several degrees, the housing is cracked, or the control cannot stage equipment you have added since it was installed. If a repair elsewhere fixes it, we tell you that instead.

Thermostat Replacement — quick answers

Can I keep my old thermostat if I replace my furnace?

Sometimes, but often not. Newer two stage and variable speed equipment needs more wires and different control logic than an older thermostat can provide. We check compatibility during the equipment quote so there are no surprises at startup.

Does a smart thermostat need extra wiring?

Most need a common wire for constant power. Many older homes do not have one run to the wall. We check what is in the wall first and discuss the options, which may include pulling a new wire or using an adapter.

Why does my new thermostat read a different temperature than the old one?

Location and sensor calibration both matter. If the thermostat sits near a register, a lamp, a drafty wall, or direct sun, the reading will skew. We can adjust the offset or relocate the control to a better spot.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on the phone shorten the visit considerably.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, the outdoor unit and the heat exchanger side before naming a cause. You get the finding in plain words, not a parts list you cannot read.

  3. Step 3

    You approve the repair

We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and what happens if you wait. Nothing gets replaced without your say so. Most common repairs are handled the same visit.

Why homeowners call us

  • Old housing stock is normal hereBasements with converted octopus trunk lines, ducts retrofitted around joists, returns that were never sized right. We work in these houses constantly and we size the repair to the house you actually have.
  • Long heating seasonsFurnaces in this region run hard from October into April, and lake effect stretches it further. We know what wear looks like at that mileage, from cracked igniters to blower motors that have been dragging for two winters.
  • Cooling and heating bothOne crew for air conditioning repair and heating repair. The same ductwork moves air in July and January, so a technician who understands both sides catches problems a single-season contractor tends to walk past.
  • Plain talk about repair versus replaceSometimes a part fixes it for years. Sometimes you are putting money into a system that is done. We tell you which one we think you are looking at and why, then leave the decision with you.
