The indoor air quality symptoms we hear most
- Every doorknob shocks me all winter Dry indoor air, humidifier not running or starved for water
- The basement smells damp and the floor feels sticky in July High indoor humidity, dehumidifier or drainage problem
- Dust settles on everything two days after I clean Filtration bypass, leaky return ductwork, undersized media filter
- My allergies are worse inside the house than outside Poor filtration, no fresh air exchange, dirty blower and coil
- The upstairs air feels stale and stuffy with the windows shut Little or no mechanical ventilation, blocked or closed returns
Whether you call it indoor air quality work or air purifier installation, the work is identical and so is the quote you approve first.
Safe things to check first
Worth a look before you call — sometimes it saves you the visit.
- 1Check the thermostat settings and batteries, including any humidity or humidifier setting if your thermostat has one.
- 2Change or replace the air filter and note the size and how dirty it looks. A loaded filter chokes airflow to every room.
- 3Walk the house and confirm supply vents and return grilles are open and not blocked by rugs, furniture or storage boxes.
- 4Look at the breaker for the furnace or air handler, since purifiers and UV lights lose power when that circuit trips.

What indoor humidity should I aim for in winter?
Most homes in our region feel right somewhere in the 30 to 40 percent range during heating season. Higher than that and you get condensation on old single-pane windows. Lower and you get static, dry throats and gaps opening in wood trim.
Do whole-home air purifiers actually help?
A properly sized media or electronic purifier in the ductwork captures far more than a one-inch filter, because all the return air passes through it. It helps most with dust and pollen. It will not fix a musty smell coming from standing water.
How often does a humidifier need service?
Once a heating season. The evaporator pad or drum sleeve mineralizes, the water line strainer clogs and the valve can stick. We change the pad, flush the line and confirm it is feeding and draining before winter loads it up.
Why do I need a dehumidifier if I have air conditioning?
Air conditioning removes moisture only while it is running. During mild, damp stretches it barely cycles, so basements stay clammy. A whole-home dehumidifier runs on humidity instead of temperature, which is why older basements benefit from one.
Are UV lights worth adding?
UV lights installed at the coil help keep biological growth off the wet surface, which cuts the smell some homeowners notice when the AC starts up. Lamps lose output and need replacing on a schedule. They do not replace filtration.
I smell gas near my furnace. What should I do?
Leave the building right away, take everyone with you and do not touch switches. From outside, call 911 or your gas utility. Once they have cleared the home, call us and we will inspect the heating equipment and venting.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on the phone shorten the visit considerably.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, the outdoor unit and the heat exchanger side before naming a cause. You get the finding in plain words, not a parts list you cannot read.
- Step 3
You approve the repair
We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and what happens if you wait. Nothing gets replaced without your say so. Most common repairs are handled the same visit.

Why homeowners call us
- Old housing stock is normal hereBasements with converted octopus trunk lines, ducts retrofitted around joists, returns that were never sized right. We work in these houses constantly and we size the repair to the house you actually have.
- Long heating seasonsFurnaces in this region run hard from October into April, and lake effect stretches it further. We know what wear looks like at that mileage, from cracked igniters to blower motors that have been dragging for two winters.
- Cooling and heating bothOne crew for air conditioning repair and heating repair. The same ductwork moves air in July and January, so a technician who understands both sides catches problems a single-season contractor tends to walk past.
- Plain talk about repair versus replaceSometimes a part fixes it for years. Sometimes you are putting money into a system that is done. We tell you which one we think you are looking at and why, then leave the decision with you.
- All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York and the rest.
- Straight answersNot worth fixing? We say that out loud, and often it saves you the visit fee.
