The heat pump symptoms we hear most
- Air from the vents feels cool even though the heat is on Reversing valve stuck in cooling, low refrigerant charge, or auxiliary heat not staging in
- The outdoor unit is buried in ice and stays that way Defrost control board, defrost sensor or thermostat failure, or a dead outdoor fan
- It runs all day and never satisfies the thermostat Undercharge, dirty outdoor coil, compressor losing capacity, or oversized backup heat lockout settings
- Loud bang or whoosh when the system switches modes Reversing valve slugging or a refrigerant charge and metering issue
- The furnace and heat pump seem to fight each other Dual-fuel changeover wiring, outdoor sensor, or thermostat configuration
Search for it as heat pump repair or heat pump service and you land in the same place: one visit, one written quote.
Safe things to check first
Worth a look before you call — sometimes it saves you the visit.
- 1Put fresh batteries in the thermostat and confirm it is set to Heat with a setpoint above the room temperature.
- 2Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker on the indoor air handler or the outdoor unit and leave it alone if it trips again.
- 3Swap in a clean filter, since a loaded filter can freeze the indoor coil and mimic a heat pump failure.
- 4Clear snow, leaves and drifted ice away from the outdoor unit so it has room to breathe on all sides and above.

Why is my heat pump blowing cool air in winter?
Usually the reversing valve is stuck in cooling, the charge is low, or the backup heat is not staging in. It can also be a normal defrost cycle, which lasts a few minutes. If it lasts longer, call us for heating repair.
Is ice on the outdoor unit normal?
A light frost that clears every hour or so is normal. A solid block of ice that never melts means the defrost cycle is not working, often a sensor, board or fan motor. Shut the system off at the thermostat and call us.
Can you repair my heat pump or does it need replacing?
Most heat pumps are worth repairing. We look at the age, the failed part, the condition of the compressor and coils, and whether the refrigerant is still available, then give you both options and what we would do.
What is a dual-fuel system and why does mine short cycle?
Dual fuel pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace and switches between them at a set outdoor temperature. Short cycling usually traces to changeover wiring, a failed outdoor sensor, or thermostat settings that do not match the equipment.
How long does a heat pump repair visit take?
Common repairs like a capacitor, contactor, defrost sensor or fan motor are often done in one visit. Compressor and reversing valve work, or anything needing a special order part, takes longer and we will tell you the timeline up front.
My heat pump runs constantly on cold days. Is that a problem?
Long run times are normal for a heat pump in a cold snap, since it heats gently rather than in blasts. It becomes a problem when the house still loses temperature or the electric backup heat runs nonstop.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on the phone shorten the visit considerably.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical connections, the outdoor unit and the heat exchanger side before naming a cause. You get the finding in plain words, not a parts list you cannot read.
- Step 3
You approve the repair
We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and what happens if you wait. Nothing gets replaced without your say so. Most common repairs are handled the same visit.

Why homeowners call us
- Old housing stock is normal hereBasements with converted octopus trunk lines, ducts retrofitted around joists, returns that were never sized right. We work in these houses constantly and we size the repair to the house you actually have.
- Long heating seasonsFurnaces in this region run hard from October into April, and lake effect stretches it further. We know what wear looks like at that mileage, from cracked igniters to blower motors that have been dragging for two winters.
- Cooling and heating bothOne crew for air conditioning repair and heating repair. The same ductwork moves air in July and January, so a technician who understands both sides catches problems a single-season contractor tends to walk past.
- Plain talk about repair versus replaceSometimes a part fixes it for years. Sometimes you are putting money into a system that is done. We tell you which one we think you are looking at and why, then leave the decision with you.
- All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York and the rest.
- Straight answersNot worth fixing? We say that out loud, and often it saves you the visit fee.
